Questions
Common questions from Sydney candidates
Where can I sit IELTS in Sydney?
British Council Sydney is at Level 1, 255 George Street. IDP operates several Sydney locations including the CBD and Parramatta. IELTS on Computer is available at multiple approved venues across Greater Sydney including Chatswood and Bankstown. Book 3–4 weeks ahead for preferred dates.
What IELTS score do I need for Australian skilled migration?
General Skilled Migration (189/190) requires Competent English (IELTS 6.0 in all four bands) at minimum. Proficient English (7.0 in each band) adds 10 points to your points test, and Superior English (8.0 in each) adds 20 points. Most competitive candidates in Sydney aim for Proficient or Superior English to improve their points score and EOI ranking.
What IELTS score does AHPRA require for nursing registration in Australia?
AHPRA requires an overall IELTS band of 7.0 with no individual band below 7.0 for overseas-trained nurses and midwives. This is the same as the NMC requirement in the UK. Writing is most frequently the barrier. IELTS Memo tracks your per-criterion scores across every practice essay so you can see exactly which band is holding you back.
What do Sydney universities require for IELTS?
The University of Sydney and UNSW typically require IELTS 6.5–7.0 overall for most postgraduate programmes, with minimum 6.0 in each band. Some competitive programmes require 7.0 or higher in writing. Check the specific requirements for your course on the university's admissions pages.
