Is there a minimum typing speed for IELTS CBT?

IELTS does not publish an official minimum WPM requirement. Most experienced instructors recommend at least 25–30 WPM to complete both tasks comfortably. Task 1 requires approximately 150 words in 20 minutes; Task 2 requires 250 words in 40 minutes. At 25 WPM you can meet both targets, but you have little time left to plan or review.

30 WPM gives you roughly 8 minutes to type 250 words, leaving 32 minutes for planning, drafting and reviewing. At 40 WPM you can type the same passage in about 6 minutes. Aim for at least 30 WPM so that typing is never the bottleneck on exam day.

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training typing practice?

For Task 1, Academic candidates describe graphs, charts, maps or diagrams (~150 words), while General Training candidates write a formal, semi-formal or informal letter (~150 words).
