The agree/disagree question is the most common Task 2 type. Learn the exact structure, language, and approach that gets Band 7+.
Question format: To what extent do you agree or disagree?
What is a Opinion Essay?
An opinion essay asks you to state and defend your personal position on an issue. The question usually ends with "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" Your job is to pick a clear side and support it with two well-developed reasons backed by examples.
Essay Structure
The four-paragraph structure
Introduction
40–60 wordsParaphrase the question statement in your own words. Then state your position clearly in a thesis statement — do not sit on the fence.
Body Paragraph 1
90–110 wordsPresent your first main reason. Explain it fully, then support it with a specific example or evidence. Use one idea per paragraph.
Body Paragraph 2
90–110 wordsPresent your second reason — or acknowledge the opposing view, then explain why your position is still stronger (a concession + rebuttal).
Conclusion
40–60 wordsRestate your position in different words. Summarise your two reasons briefly. Do not introduce new ideas.

Sample question
Some people think that governments should spend money on public transport to reduce traffic problems. Others believe that building more roads is the best solution. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
✗ Band 5–6
“Nowadays, traffic is a big problem in many countries. Some people say governments should improve public transport, while others say more roads are needed. In my opinion, I think both have advantages and disadvantages.”
Weak: vague paraphrase, no clear position, the phrase 'I think both have advantages' avoids commitment and will hurt Task Achievement.
✓ Band 7+
“Urban congestion is an increasingly pressing issue for governments worldwide. While road expansion offers a short-term fix, I firmly believe that sustained investment in public transport is the more effective long-term solution, as it addresses demand rather than simply accommodating it.”
Strong: specific paraphrase, clear thesis, hints at the argument structure (short-term vs. long-term), no wasted words.

Mistakes to avoid
Common opinion essay errors
Sitting on the fence — saying "I agree and disagree" without committing to a position
Pick one side, even if partial. "I largely agree" or "I disagree to a great extent" still counts as a clear position.
Changing your position in the conclusion
Your conclusion must match your introduction. If you said you agree, the conclusion must restate agreement.
Listing ideas without developing them
Each body paragraph needs ONE idea, a full explanation, and a specific example. Two weak ideas are worse than one strong one.
Using memorised phrases that sound unnatural
Use phrases you can control accurately. "I think" is better than a misused idiom that sounds forced.
Examiner tip
Examiners reward consistency. Your thesis in the introduction must match your conclusion. If you say you strongly agree, both body paragraphs should support agreement — not one for, one against.
FAQ
Common questions about opinion essays
Can I partially agree in an IELTS opinion essay?
Yes. You can say 'I largely agree' or 'I agree to some extent' — but you must still lean clearly one way. What you cannot do is give equal weight to both sides without a conclusion.
Should I write about both sides if the question says 'agree or disagree'?
You can briefly acknowledge the other side in Body Paragraph 2 (a concession), but your overall essay must defend your chosen position. Do not spend half your essay arguing the opposite view.
How many body paragraphs should an opinion essay have?
Two body paragraphs is the standard structure. Each should contain one main point, developed with explanation and an example. Three body paragraphs are possible but risky — each point ends up underdeveloped.
Can I use 'I' in an IELTS essay?
Yes. Opinion essays require you to state your view, so using 'I believe', 'I argue', or 'In my opinion' is not only acceptable but expected. Avoid overusing it — once or twice per paragraph is enough.
