Scoring criteria

Graded on all 4 official IELTS criteria

Human examiners score every IELTS Writing essay on four criteria, each worth 25% of your total band score. IELTS Memo grades you on the same framework — not just grammar.

TATask Achievement

Does your essay fully answer the question? Is your position clear and supported with relevant ideas?

CCCoherence & Cohesion

Is your essay logically organised? Do your paragraphs flow naturally with appropriate linking words?

LRLexical Resource

How wide is your vocabulary range? Do you avoid repetition and choose precise, appropriate words?

GRAGrammatical Range & Accuracy

Do you use a variety of sentence structures? How accurate is your grammar and punctuation?

Scores are given in 0.5-band increments — the same intervals used in the real exam. The overall band is the mean of all four criteria, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

FAQ

Common questions

How accurate is the AI essay grader?

IELTS Memo uses a frontier AI model (Claude) trained to apply the official IELTS Writing Band Descriptors. In our internal consistency tests, the AI produces the same band score on repeated gradings of the same essay. For bands 5–7, accuracy is within ±0.5 of what a human examiner would give. Scores at Band 8–9 are estimates — the subtle nuances at the top of the scale are harder for any AI to judge with certainty.

Is it really free to grade my IELTS essay?

Yes. You can grade 2 full essays per month completely free — no credit card required. Each free grading includes a band score across all 4 criteria, a full error list with corrections, AI assessment, and your #1 priority fix. Pro users get 10 gradings per day plus deep feedback with paragraph rewrites and a Band 7+ model answer.

Does it work for both Task 1 and Task 2?

Yes. IELTS Memo grades Task 2 (opinion, discussion, problem-solution, and two-part questions) and Task 1 Academic (charts, graphs, diagrams) and Task 1 General Training (formal and informal letters). Select your task type before submitting so the AI applies the correct marking criteria.

What feedback do I get?

You receive: (1) an overall band score and individual scores for all 4 criteria, (2) every error in your essay highlighted and corrected with an explanation, (3) a criterion-by-criterion narrative, (4) an overall assessment covering your main strength and key blocker, and (5) a single #1 priority action — the one change that will raise your score the most.

How is this different from Grammarly or ChatGPT?

Grammarly checks grammar only and has no concept of IELTS band scores. ChatGPT can give general feedback but doesn't apply the official IELTS band descriptors consistently. IELTS Memo is built specifically for IELTS — it scores on the same 4 criteria examiners use, tracks your recurring mistakes across essays, and generates exercises from your personal error patterns so you improve over time.

Does IELTS Memo remember my mistakes over time?

Yes — this is one of the key differences from a one-shot grader. When you create a free account, IELTS Memo tracks your error patterns across every essay you submit. If you keep making the same grammar mistake, it surfaces as a 'score blocker' and generates targeted practice exercises to fix it. The AI coach also has context of your history when you ask it questions.

Is this an official IELTS score?

No. Scores are AI estimates for practice purposes only. Only IDP, British Council, and Cambridge Assessment English can issue official IELTS certificates. Use IELTS Memo to identify weaknesses and practise — then sit the official exam when you feel ready.
